Mark | Part 7

What sort of power does Jesus have over the brokenness in our world?

How do believers come to understand the truth of the gospel?

Discussion Questions:

Question #1

  • What do you think the people eating the bread Jesus had just multiplied would have thought?
  • In what ways have you been tempted to take God’s generosity for granted?

Mark 7:5-13 // And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,

“‘This people honors me with their lips,
    but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)— 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,13 thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

Question #2

  • Why does Jesus rebuke the Pharisees in 7:5–13?
  • In what ways are they hypocrites?

Question #3

  • Have you added self-made “rules” that make you feel more holy, in your sight?
  • In what ways have you added to the gospel, like the Pharisees did?

Question #4

  • What “external” things are you blaming your sin on?
  • What has to happen for you to allow Jesus to change your heart?

Takeaway Question:

  • In what ways do you feel you see Jesus more clearly now?
  • How does this passage increase your understanding of him and his mission?

What's Happening

Fill Joey's Food Locker

Fill Joey’s Food Locker

Joey’s Food Locker (Natomas High School) is in need of non-perishable food items to fill their shelves. They have seen explosive need in our community with everyone going on right now. Let’s help stock them back up as they are serving 3-4 times the people they were just 6 months ago. The biggest needs are peanut butter and breakfast cereal.

There are 2 ways to get the food collected. Either drop off at the Snider’s house (text us for the address) or text us for a non-contact porch pick up. We will be happy to come and get the items from you!
